Stultitiae Laus

September 2018

S.L. Many people wonder if they’re my initials, they just stand for Stultitiae Laus – The Praise of Folly, inspired by the name of the essay written in 1509 by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam.
This painting is the first of the kind Totem I’ve ever created. It’s an extremely vertical composition that usually includes many poses of the same subject.
The totemic animal is the octopus, tentacles sneak through the bodies and decorate the scene in a syncretic view that mix sacred and profane elements and remind to the Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos that I’ve loved ever since I was a kid.
